Handling loved ones' affairs

Legal affairs

Dealing with the Will, possessions and estate of a loved one can be a challenge, but here are a few useful pointers to get started.

First of all, you will need to locate the Will. You will probably have done this before the funeral, but in case you haven’t that should be done as soon as is convenient.

You will then need to look into the first few urgent tasks of managing the estate of the deceased - again these may have been dealt with before the funeral. Talk to a legal advisor about:

  • How to protect property, especially if it is unoccupied
  • How to arrange insurance for assets and motor vehicles remaining in the deceased’s name
  • Potential future benefit entitlement and advice on stopping existing benefit payments in order to avoid repayment issues
